front2106Stuart Cowles moved to Asheville in 1992, searching for a city city which could be home to one of the first rock climbing centers in the country. Not long after, he founded Climbmax Indoor Climbing Center in downtown Asheville and Climbmax Mountain Guides. As the Asheville climbing community has continued to grow, so has the need for a larger climbing gym with more opportunities for lead climbing and training for the great rocks of the region. This led to the creation of the Smoky Mountain Adventure Center in the River Arts District.
